Finding your Shadow Self, Guest Post by Jamie White

And here is the post from my shadow self. I adopted Clarissa (the muse from my book and my personal muse) for the job. She stands up for herself, is tricky, and doesn’t believe in a lot of the normal rules. She can also get a bad tempter if someone ticks her off enough and is highly competitive.

Sensitivity Overload

Don’t say this. Don’t like that. Better watch making that joke, you might offend someone. Can you believe what that team’s name is? Oh, my God! Did they just say that on TV?

It must really be exhausting to live in the modern human world. Good thing for me, I don’t.

Who am I? Thanks for asking! I’m Clarissa and I am Jamie’s muse– you may have seen a post or two from me before. I’m also serving as her shadow self. What’s that? Well, making a shadow self is part of this workshop that Jamie took with this chick named Kris. If you haven’t met her yet, what are you waiting for?

Where was I? Oh, yeah–I wanted to talk to you about something that really gets under my skin. Humans take things entirely too seriously. I mean, is there anything left that’s not “offensive” anymore? It’s a wonder people bother saying anything at all for fear of saying the wrong thing. Doesn’t that sound so awful?

Here’s the deal: whatever color you are, whatever party you’re part of (ugh…. that reminds me: I have some concession speeches to write. Don’t make wagers, people.), or religion you follow–these are all arbitrary divisions that are a load of crap. Seriously, when you get down to the nitty-gritty, we’re all the same inside. Isn’t that what people preach when talking about equality?

So why the hell are people so attached to the labels society puts on you? Why do you cling to them for dear life and allow others to use these labels to pit you against each other?

Let’s get real: You’re here. They’re here. The only thing to do is learn to live together, which means people are going to disagree with you–get used to it! Practice some kindness and accepting people as they are, whether you agree with their politics, faith, lifestyle, or not. And yes, that does mean everyone. Try really listening to them instead of shouting them down because someone on TV told you to.

People have so much more power than they realize. Use it to make a world where you really do “live as one”.
