In film and television, a “meet cute” is a scene in which the two people who will form a future romantic couple meet for the first time, typically under unusual, humorous, or “cute” circumstances. This type of scene is a staple of romantic comedies. (Wikipedia)
Just wondering … are you as much of a romantic as I am? Since you’re *here* with me, I imagine you just might be.
I first heard this notion of a meet cute while watching a movie called The Holiday, starring Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Jack Black and Jude Law. The two main characters, both women, decide to swap homes to escape their “man troubles” and of course end up meeting new romantic counterparts. The small-town gal from the UK ends up in a mansion in Beverly Hills amongst glittery Hollywood stars and the other runs off to sequester her spoiled, overambitious self in a sweet English cottage. (This movie is so charming and I highly recommend it … I love it almost as much as Serendipity, starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale. The tagline for Serendipity was “Destiny With A Sense of Humor.”)
I love the girl meets boy variety of stories, whether they be in fiction or real life. The twist of fate that brings two people together makes for some of the world’s best storytelling.
A memorable meet cute for me was when I met one of my college sweethearts, Eduardo.
I trip going up the stairs. A sophomore at Cal State Northridge, rushing to figure out where to go for my first class. Books spilling everywhere, I fall down face first and this young man with an alluring accent asks if I’m ok. He helps me pick up my books.
I look up at his face and I gasp–not sure if it was a sound in my head or if it was audible. I lower my eyes quickly, shyly looking at my feet. My pink toes and beach-tanned feet looked huge in my cheap red flip flops from Thrifty drug store. I was both embarrassed at my clumsiness and completely struck by lightning. Up to that point he was probably the most beautiful man that had ever spoken to me–dark brown hair and skin with the most piercing blue eyes I’d ever seen. I was dumbfounded and could barely mutter a word because he had taken my breath away.
He follows me into Dr. Grigsby’s Music Theory class and sits down next to me.
Dr. Grigsby gives him a look and smiles. “Are you supposed to be in this class? Didn’t you take it last quarter?”
To that my Mr. Gorgeous flashed her a dazzling Latin American smile, quite devilish. “Yes, I need a review so all the concepts become second nature.”
They smiled at each other surreptitiously. I was completely oblivious to the contextual underbelly of their playful glances towards each other and me.
And, that is how my love affair with Eduardo began. I would love to tell you my whole love story … but you’ll need to come to my writing playshop this weekend to hear it!
